Main areas of the scientific and practical activity: specialist in the area of biology, geology, paleontology, paleogeography; biogeography and stratigraphy of the Precambrian and Early Paleozoic; evolution of the biosphere, bacterial paleontology, biomineralization, and biominerogenesis. Author of more than 330 publications, including 25 monographs. He trained twelve PhD and five Doctors of Science. Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Regional Geology and Metallogeny”; Editor-in-Chief of the "Paleontological Journal"; member of the editorial boards of a number of domestic and international journals, including "Advances in Modern Biology"; Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Aerospace and Environmental Medicine”.
