Main areas of the scientific and practical activity: prominent specialist in the area of geology of metallic and non-metallic minerals, metallogeny, structures of ore fields and deposits. He created a structural-petrophysical method designed to identify paleotectonic stress fields and to determine physical-mechanical properties in ore formation, structure formation, and geoecology; he developed a geodynamic systematization of geological structures. Author of over 290 works, including 10 monographs. Author and co-author of 18 textbooks and tutorials, including “Metallogeny”, “Geology of Mineral Resources”, “Mineral Resources and Civilization”, etc. Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Bulletin of Moscow State University”; Editor-in-Chief of the “Smirnov Scientific and Literary Almanac”. The first Chairman of the Acad. V.I. Smirnov Public Fund, awarded a Diploma named after. Acad. V.I. Smirnov.
